I am the first to admit that when it comes to car care, I am not the best. If my husband didn’t remind me of when it was time to get my oil changed, honestly, I would probably go a lot longer in between changes, which is not a good thing.

Create a preventive maintenance checklist

First things first. It’s important to know what needs to be done to your car and when. The information can easily be found in the manual for your car. However, in case you don’t have it, you can always take your car to a have a car-care expert perform the needed maintenance.

Checking the Tire Pressure & Changing a Flat Tire

True story, one day I was driving downtown and the tire literally came off of my car WHILE I was driving. Needless to say, I was terrified and had no clue what to do, besides calling my husband and my dad. I have always tried to make sure that I knew and understood how to check my tire pressure (luckily now I have a vehicle that lets me know when the pressure is low), and how to put in my tires if it’s needed.

When it comes to changing a tire, I have attempted (although I struggled). The great thing about learning this is the power of YouTube; you can find videos relating to almost any vehicle so if you are in a bind, this is a great option. Even if your insurance or vehicle comes equipped with roadside assistance, it’s still good to know how to do this just in case you are somewhere that they can’t get to you in a reasonable amount of time.

Checking & Changing your Oil

Here’s another true story. I once went 7,000 miles before getting an oil change. YIKES! In my inexperienced defense I simply thought that by buying a container of oil and adding it to my car, everything was fine.
