Creating the Perfect Cozy Area for your Cat (+ Our epic DIY Fail)

A few weeks ago we rescued a beautiful Calico cat.

This is our first time ever owning a cat, and we had absolutely no idea what do really do with her. For the last ten years we had a boxer, but after he passed away, it too soon for us to get another, so we decided a cat was the best way to go.

There is a giant learning curve when it comes to owning a cat. With dogs, you don’t have purchase scratching posts, litter or spray. However, as we are learning with our cat, you need all of that and more.

We are also learning (sometimes the hard way) that when she doesn’t want to be bothered, she will definitely let you know (OUCH)!

As new as this has been for us, I wouldn’t want to change it for the world. She has been the perfect added addition to our family, and being able to create the perfect space for her has been so much fun for me.

Our Epic Fail

Sorry, there won’t be any photos of how bad it came out because I was so disgusted that I just didn’t bother.

My husband and I started out trying to build a cat bed/kitty litter hideaway. It looks simple enough, right? Eh, that’s what we thought. I ordered what I needed, including a cute cat door. Halfway through the building, I decided to double check to ensure that cat door I ordered, would actually be big enough for her to go through.

Of course, it wasn’t.

The good thing is, that it wasn’t my fault, it was actually the company who I ordered from. The bad part is we were planning for a week since we only had one day to build because of my husband’s work schedule, and I didn’t have a backup plan.

Our Plan B

Our plan B consisted of finding products to help create a functional play area for her instead. This is where I learned just how many toys and products there were for cats.

We found an amazing cat tree for a great deal and a few toys that she absolutely loves. Except for the pesky auto string toy…she seems to be terrified of it.

We also set up a spot for her food and water near her play area that will allow her to jump from her cat tree down to her bowl. She loves being able to crawl in and out of the barrel and having the freedom to jump from area to the next. We even positioned an extra cat bed at the bottom for her as an option that she can use as well.

The only thing we chose not to include in her cat space was her litter box. We have a top entry box located in the corner of our back room so that she can have privacy.

Food

When it comes to navigating cat food, we wanted only the best for Pumpkin. But like everything else for cats, there were so many different brands to choose from. In honor of our adopted pet, we decided that Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® was the only option for us.  A  portion of proceeds from each sale of Nutrish is donated to The Rachael Ray Foundation, which helps animals in need.

More than $23.5 million has been donated to animal charities and other organizations that do good for animals. The funds are used for food, medical supplies, treatments, and more.

One of Pumpkins favorite flavors is the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Longevity Chicken with Chickpeas & Salmon Recipe. With added vitamins, minerals & taurine, this recipe is a real superfood blend for your cat’s lifelong nutritional needs.

Here are a few benefits of the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Longevity Chicken with Chickpeas & Salmon Recipe:

  • Real U.S. farm-raised chicken is always the #1 ingredient, plus real salmon.
  • HEART – Chicken is high in quality protein, which helps support a healthy heart.
  • MIND – Salmon and menhaden fish meal contain DHA, which helps support mental acuity.
  • BODY – Chickpeas are high in protein and fiber, which help support strong muscles and optimal body weight.
  • Safely USA cooked with the world’s best ingredients.
  • Gradually introduce the food by incorporating it into your current cat food over the course of 7-10 days. Slowly replace your cat’s current food with Longevity until it’s completely switched over.

Another favorite of ours is the Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Purrfect Entrees™. The Cravin Chicken dinner has turned into one of Pumpkins favorites, that I have hardly been able to keep any in the house! It’s made with real white meat chicken and tender veggies in real gravy. Plus contains no ground corn, wheat or soy with no artificial preservatives.

Cats are wonderful pets! We always had one growing up and I got a kitten when I moved out on my own. Only the best food, toys and living space for my fuzzy little guy. He passed on many years ago and I would love to get another cat but my husband is allergic.

Our cat recently passed away and in the last year or so we had really started to like the Rachel Ray cat food line. It made him quite happy in his old age.
