Witnessing several family members battle cancer over such a short period of time has made me realize that no matter how much they say “I can handle it,” they need as much support from those around them as possible.
My grandfather is currently going through his battle with lung cancer. Living two hours away makes it difficult for us to be there for him as much as we want to be.
In addition to regular errands such as grocery shopping, taking his car to be serviced, cooking, cleaning and picking up his prescriptions, there are doctors’ visits and daily radiation treatments that he must attend.
My grandmother, who is just a few years younger and battling her own health issues, is his sole support system.
Having lost two of their children to cancer in the last couple of years, he (as well as the rest of us) knows and understands what is needed. But the reality is that, with family members in a number of states (and countries), it is rather difficult to ensure that we are effectively meeting the needs of my grandfather.
It isn’t possible to always coordinate with everyone in a timely fashion, as there are times that he doesn’t communicate things with us until the last hour, or we find out last minute that the help we thought we had in place was, in fact, not helpful (or backed out).
To help combat these problems and ensure that my grandfather is getting 100% from us whenever he needs it, our family decided to use a free app from Pfizer called LivingWith™, designed to help manage life with cancer and organize certain important information in one place.
The LivingWith app has allowed my family to coordinate with my grandparents and one another, using a visual schedule to see what he needs done, and where and when. This means that we can coordinate with one another in advance to make sure that we are there when he needs us.
One of my favorite features of the app is the voice-recorded notes. Any questions that we, or my grandfather, have between appointments, can be recorded onto the app and played back for the doctor.
There is also a way for my grandfather to log any pain or sleep issues he is having. This has been especially beneficial for us, as it allows us to know if there is something immediate we need to address.
The LivingWith mobile app has been the perfect way for our family to connect and help not only my grandfather during this time but each other as well.
