Mitchelville Beach Park: Hilton Head Island Hidden Treasure

July 14, 2017 in #DiscoverSC, South Carolina Travel

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is one of South Carolina’s greatest coastal treasures. It’s also one of our favorite(and in my opinion) the best travel destination for families. We have been coming to Hilton Head for years. We have celebrated weddings, reunions, nearly everything under the sun, on this beautiful little island.

On the island, you won’t find the typical go-carts, amusement rides or surf shops that you may find on Myrtle Beach or Folly Beach. However, what you will find is a top-notch family dining, mini golf and of course the beach. What I love the most is that a majority of the island is pet-friendly!

Mitchellville Beach Park aka Freedom Park is located in Beaufort County on Hilton Head Island. This beautiful beach is definitely off the beaten path, with its undisturbed beach charm and nature trails, this is one place your family needs to visit.

With sweeping views of the sea and its abundant wildlife, we know why the locals have kept this place a hidden secret for so long.

FACT: The island’s slaves were freed in 1861 long before the Civil War ended. That’s right, this area was the very 1st free slave town in the United States. Hilton Head Island has a history as a safe haven and refuge for freed slaves before and after the Civil War.

Mitchelville is not really a lounging beach. You can sunbathe, but I would not suggest going in the water. The tides have been super strong every time we’ve come up here.

There are plaques along the trail that talk about the history of the area.
