Over the years we have seen Disney reach new heights with the release of their films. Whether its taking us on a wild adventure through retro and new age video games, whisking us off to distant lands, ot learning that love doesn’t always have to come from a man, Moana is an adventure so different that it will be a must add to your Disney collection. I have to give Disney lots of kudos for this film; besides being a great story, it is very reminiscent of the “golden age” of Disney films musically as well. Moana is everything that you want and need from Disney; there are laughs, and even a tear-jerker moment that will make you say “I’m not crying, YOU ARE”!
Don’t worry, since it just came out today, I am not going to give much of the film away. Moana is not your typical princess film. Like more of the modern Disney princesses such as Merida or even Queen Elsa, Moana learns to take matters into her own hands, and doesn’t leave her fate to anyone else. One thing this movie proves is that Moana is not a princess, but a hero!
Moana is the story of a teenage girl who sails out on a mission to save her people. Auli’I Cravalho voices Moana. She guided on her journey by a demi-god named Maui, who is voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Maui is able to shapeshift into different animals and pulls islands from the sea, with the help of his magical fishhook.
The water visuals in this film are absolutely breathtaking. The gorgeous colors are a reminder that Disney is king in the animation department. If you have a chance to see it in 3D I recommend it.
As if this movie could not get any better, “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is the creator behind “How Far I’ll Go” and “We Know The Way”. The entire soundtrack is so good, that I guarantee that your entire family will be singing it for days! The musical numbers are just as breathtaking as the entire film is. “You’re Welcome” will definitely become one of your favorites! The plus side, we get to hear the vocal stylings of Dwayne Johnson.
There are some dark moments in this film-with moments talking about monsters and other creatures, which is more than likely why this has a PG rating. Overall, Moana is an amazing film that is one your entire family will love.
