I was twenty years old when I had my first child nearly fourteen years ago. During that time in my life, I can honestly say that I was scared and had no idea what I was doing. Even now, four kids later, there are days where I have absolutely no clue what to do.
We all know that parenting doesn’t come with a handbook. If it did, we would all be on easy street, right?
From colicky late nights to the first day of kindergarten, in a lot of ways we are just winging it by taking things day by day.
However, there are a few constants with parenting that never change. Like when baby is crying, and you have to eventually do the “side-to-side jig” as my mom would call it. Years later, that is my go to move even with my youngest currently being three. It’s one of those movements that never gets old.
That’s why I want to share with you my favorite tips to surviving the first year with a new baby.
If you need help, ask for it
For some reason becoming a mom for some people, turns them into a martyr. It doesn’t have to be that way. Trying to go at everything alone can be one of the worst things you could do. There will be times where baby won’t sleep at night. There may be moments where you are so exhausted you can’t see straight. Never let guilt, embarrassment or your ego get in the way of accepting help.
Cherish these moments
Kids grow up fast. Trust me. I used to think it was a figure of speech, but there are days where I still can’t believe that little girl who born nearly fourteen years ago will be venturing off to high school this fall. Let me put it this way, fast is definitely an understatement. The first year is the start of many best years to come. The baby stage is so amazing for a variety of reasons. There will be days where you will want to run out of the room screaming, while simultaneously wanting to cuddle and never let them go. It’s weird, and you’ll feel weird. But I promise, you will love every moment of it.
It’s okay to take a break
Remember when I said there will be times when you want to cuddle and never let them go. It’s okay to let them go from time to time. If you have the opportunity to take a much needed break, do so. Self-care is an important part of parenting that we often overlook.
There will be things you need and there will be things you definitely DON’T need
Baby items are a dime a dozen. There are so many products on the market that it can be very overwhelming to navigate what you need and don’t need.
Even if you are still in the stage of trying to decide what’s important and what isn’t, one thing you will definitely need, is a way to feed your baby!
The Nurser with Drop-Ins® Liners are closer to natural breastfeeding than other bottle systems. The unique liner contracts for air free feeding (reducing colic, gas & fussiness) like breastfeeding. Each system comes with a set of liners that are pre-sterilized so you just drop them in for a guaranteed clean bottle every time.
Working on their cognitive development early is important to me as well. Cognitive development refers to how newborns learn, acquire knowledge and interact with his/her environment.
One way to do that is by using a quality baby formula that has DHA and MFGM. DHA is a fatty acid shown to foster learning ability through the preschool years. MFGM has been clinically shown to help close the gap in cognitive development between formula-fed and breastfed infants.** Enfamil NeuroPro is the first formula to add MFGM as an ingredient in amounts supported by clinical research.
