The Varsity Atlanta

October 11, 2019 in Restaurant Explorers, Travel

The Varsity is one of Atlanta’s most popular spots. This is one of our favorite places, every time we go you can always bet that we will stop here.  The Varsity is a downtown Atlanta institution and The World’s Largest Drive-in Restaurant.

The decor is reminiscent of an old-school diner, which is one of the things I love most about The Varsity. The things they do with a chili burger or chili dog should be illegal, although I’m glad it isn’t!  Don’t let the big crowds fool you, they serve hundreds of people a day and you won’t find yourself waiting too long at all.

The Varsity opened in 1928, and has been going strong ever since! They even have Varsity ‘speak’.

Here’s a list of common Varsity “speak” that will have you ordering like a local in no time (source):

Heavy Weight – hot dog with extra chili
Red Dog – a naked dog with ketchup
Steak – hamburger with ketchup, mustard, and pickle
Bag of Rags – potato chips
Joe-ree – coffee with cream
P.C. – plain chocolate milk served with ice
Naked dog walking – plain hot dog to go
Glorified steak with strings – hamburger with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato plus a side of fries
F.O. – Frosted Varsity Orange
