Weekend Getaway: 24 Hours in Macon

October 3, 2017 in South Carolina Travel, Travel

Macon,Georgia is a great southern hotspot located just south of Atlanta. This hidden gem features a wide variety of fun activities available around the city which makes it a great option for a quick weekend family getaway. From music to museums to sports, to amazing restaurants, there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

With a wide variety of exhibitions that are sure to pique the interest of kids of all ages, The Museum of Arts and Sciences is just one of the many museums in town. This kid-friendly attraction includes a  mini-zoo with over 70 live animals, interactive Discovery House, and beautiful nature trails. The Tubman Museum is a great place to visit to learn about African-American history, art and culture. If you’re a huge music fan there is the statue of Otis Redding, with him “Sittin’ on the Dock” with a guitar by the Ocmulgee River.

The Museum of Aviation has a stunning collection dating as early as 1896 featuring the replica of an early glider. The second largest museum in the U.S. Air Force showcases the history of Robins Air Force Base, there are also modern-era aircraft such as the B-1B bomber, the SR-71 Blackbird, the U-2 Dragon Lady and F-15 Eagle. One of my favorites is the De Havilland C-7A “Caribou”.

For sports buffs, there is the 43,000 sq. ft. Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Boosting over 3,000 various artifacts, the hall of fame corridor honors over 400 inductees.

At the  Ocmulgee National Monument, you can step inside the Earth Lodge built thousands of years ago (1017 AD). If you head to the top of the Great Temple Mound (built 900-1100 AD), to you can catch a view of downtown Macon. The annual Ocmulgee Indian Celebration is every September and features living history demonstrations, storytellers, dancers and more.

You can’t enjoy the peach state without some peaches! In June and July, you can tour Lane Southern Orchards and watch as they pack and ship their peaches and pecans across the United States. Can’t take the Georgia heat? Check them out in October and take a trip through the corn maze which is on a dedicated six acres of land. Don’t worry, if you happen to get lost they will even text you a hint!

If you are looking for a great weekend family getaway, be sure to take for your family to Macon,Georgia. This amazing southern hotspot is full of great activities for the entire family, that you will be able to create a weekend of memories your family will never forget!

This post is sponsored by the Macon, Georgia Tourism board, however, all opinions are my own.
